School of Law symposium to focus on inequality in public schools

October 15, 2015

University of Richmond’s School of Law is bringing together leading education policy scholars to identify and offer ways to address inequality issues in U.S. public schools.

The School of Law will host the 2015 Allen Chair Symposium, “School Inequality: Challenges and Solution,” Oct. 23 beginning at 9 a.m. in the Moot Court Auditorium.

The Allen Chair Symposium is a prized tradition of the University of Richmond Law Review. The event focuses on a prominent issue of the time and invites the nation’s leading experts to discuss it.

The keynote speaker this year is Catherine Lhamon, U.S. Department of Education assistant secretary for Civil Rights.

The symposium will also include three panel discussions focusing on the following topics:

  • State-Level Finance
  • Innovation in Addressing School Inequality
  • School Discipline.

A debate on what role the federal government should hold in the governance of public education will follow the panels. Preston Green III, professor of educational leadership and law from the University of Connecticut, will argue in favor of the federal government having an increased role and Gerard Robinson, resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, will argue against it.

The event is free and open to the public. To see the full schedule, list of participants and to register, visit the University of Richmond Law Review website. A reception will conclude the day’s activities in the Law School Atrium celebrating the release of “The Enduring Legacy of Rodriguez,” coedited by Charles Ogletree, Harvard Law School, and Kimberly Robinson, Richmond School of Law.
