UR hosts event focusing on women leaders around the world

The University of Richmond will host Women Leaders Around the World and the Paradoxical Rhetorics of Women's Belonging March 30 from 4:30-6 p.m. in the Carole Weinstein International Center Commons.

Speaker Belinda A. Stillion Southard of the University of Georgia will discuss women leaders around the world and how they rhetorically reimagine their own sense of belonging in an increasingly globalized world.

Stillion Southard will examine the flows of power among Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf; the Liberian Mass Action for Peace, a pro-peace organization that helped end the Liberian Civil Wars; and Michelle Bachelet, the former executive director of United Nations Women.

“Dr. Stillion Southard’s work explores how women leaders across the globe are making some of the most important decisions today around human rights and the human condition,” said rhetoric and communications professor Timothy Barney. “We are increasingly experiencing a globalized world, and our campus can be inspired by studying the ways women lead in it.”

Stillion Southard earned a Ph.D. in communication and a women’s studies certificate from the University of Maryland.

This event is sponsored by the Department of Rhetoric and Communication Studies, and is free and open to the public.
