Robins School of Business Alumni Hall of Fame to recognize E. Claiborne Robins as inaugural recipient
The inaugural recipient into the Robins School of Business Alumni Hall of Fame is E. Claiborne Robins, R’31. The award will be accepted by E. Claiborne Robins, Jr., R’68, on his father’s behalf during University of Richmond’s Reunion Weekend June 3.
“We are delighted to take the opportunity to honor University of Richmond alumni in this way, and there is no better person to recognize in the inaugural year of this award than our namesake, E. Claiborne Robins,” said Nancy Bagranoff, dean of the Robins School.
In 1969, when financial issues threatened the University, Robins donated $50 million, the largest gift made to an institution of higher education at the time. It still remains among the 20 largest gifts to any university. He challenged Richmond “to become the finest small private university in the nation.” Robins and his wife, Lora, gave more than $175 million to Richmond during their lifetime. He passed away on July 6, 1995, at the age of 84.
“My father would be tremendously honored to be the first Hall of Fame inductee,” said Robins. “Over and above that, he would be thrilled with how the business school has grown over the years in both brick and mortar and reputation.”
The Robins School of Business Alumni Hall of Fame award and induction will be given annually to recognize an alumnus or alumna of University of Richmond who graduated ten or more years previously and has made significant accomplishments in business and service.
The Robins School Executive Advisory Council’s Alumni Awards Nominations Committee will review nominations in consultation with the Robins School dean and select one or more awardees each year. The names and profiles of awardees will be featured in the business school building and the recipient will receive a commemorative award.
The Robins School of Business Alumni Hall of Fame induction will occur 7 p.m. June 3 in the Ukrop Auditorium of Queally Hall and a reception will follow the ceremony. It is one of many events to be held as part of University of Richmond’s Reunion Weekend June 3-4.
