University of Richmond receives Metropolitan Business League's Social Vision Award honoring commitment to diverse businesses

The Metropolitan Business League (MBL) has awarded University of Richmond its 2016 Social Vision Award. This recognition celebrates an uncommon commitment to volunteerism, philanthropy or service toward the betterment of the Richmond region, making it a better place to work, live and visit.

The university was honored for several practices within The Office of Strategic Sourcing and Payments, which includes procurement and contract and vendor management.

UR was recognized for its supplier diversity initiative. Designed to mirror Richmond’s commitment to a diverse and inclusive campus community, this program provides support for certified women- or minority-owned business enterprises.

“Our belief is that by providing diverse suppliers the opportunity to do business with the University of Richmond, it will fuel competition, enhance economic growth and strengthen our local communities,” said Jean Hines, director of strategic sourcing and payments. “We even offer a workshop on how to do business with UR to ensure diverse vendors learn about UR’s business processes.”

The award also recognized UR’s partnerships with multiple groups, including the Carolinas-Virginia Minority Supplier Development Council, the Metropolitan Business League, the Central Virginia African American Chamber of Commerce, the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Virginia Asian Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Women Business Owners.

“This year’s 25th annual MBL Awards Dinner and Reception was special because all the individuals selected were hand-picked by Oliver R. Singleton, late president of the MBL, humanitarian, and friend to all,” said President/CEO, Sharon Dabney-Wooldridge. “University of Richmond partners with MBL to ensure that our members are able to have the means and opportunities to make Richmond a better place to grow, work and live. UR volunteers sources, time and knowledge that is crucial to the growth of our community.”

MBL is a non-profit business association that aims to foster small business success and aid in business retention.
