Democratic VP pick serves on University of Richmond faculty

Sen. Tim Kaine, who was named today by Hillary Clinton as the Democratic vice presidential nominee, maintains a part-time continuing faculty appointment at the University of Richmond Law School and the University’s Jepson School of Leadership Studies.

In his current role, he has alternated teaching between the two schools, as well as participating in events and symposia. In 2013, he was the keynote speaker at a law school conference on veterans’ law. In 2011, he was the keynote speaker at the Richmond Law Review Symposium on “Emerging from the Great Recession,” and published an essay with the University of Richmond Law Review (Economic Policy After a Lost Decade—From Over-Spending to Innovation).

“Sen. Kaine is a superb teacher whose students rave about his knowledge, intellect and open mindedness,” said Wendy C. Perdue, dean of Richmond Law. “He also has been a great community participant, known for open-door accessibility and his willingness to participate in conferences and events.”

Kaine joined the law school in 1987 as an adjunct professor and taught for six years, until he was elected to public office.

Sandra Peart, dean of the Jepson School of Leadership Studies, said, “Students come to the Jepson School with goals of effecting positive change and improving their world. Through his appointment at the school, Sen. Kaine has been a source of inspiration for our students and has shared practical insights into the complexities of leadership and ethics.”

Student course evaluations are consistently strong. And in one written for a law school class, a student wrote, “I hope Gov. Kaine runs for president one day. He already has my vote.”
