Annual International Film Series celebrates classic and contemporary

The University of Richmond will host the 28th annual International Film Series September 9 through Nov. 20 offering on-campus screenings of eight contemporary and classic foreign films by leading international filmmakers. 

The free series, which is open to the public, features celebrated and notable films from around the world in what is often their only public screening in the Richmond area.

Films include:

  • “Camille Claudel” (France), Sept. 9 and 11
  • “Rebels of the Neon God” (Taiwan), Sept. 23 and 25
  • “Alice in the Cities” (West Germany), Sept. 30 and Oct. 2
  • “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (United States), Oct. 7 and 9
  • “Tokyo Story” (Japan), Oct. 21 and 23
  • “Mia Madre” (Italy), Nov. 4 and 6
  • “A Coffee in Berlin” (Germany), Nov. 11 and 13
  • “Everybody Leaves” (Columbia), Nov. 18 and 20

As part of this series, five additional films will be shown during African Film Weekend, Sept. 16 and 17. More information is available online.

Screenings take place in the Robins School of Business, Queally Hall, Ukrop Auditorium. The films are played in their original language with English subtitles. Friday screenings are at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday screenings are at 7:30 p.m. Friday afternoon screenings also feature faculty-led introductions and post-film discussion.

“The International Film Series offers both our campus and the greater Richmond community access to films from around the world, uniquely paired with commentary from UR faculty and audience discussion,” said Martha Merritt, dean of International Education. “The series provides an opportunity to see great films and for individuals to explore new perspectives.”

The International Film Series is co-sponsored by the Office of International Education and the Boatwright Memorial Library Media Resource Center.

During the spring semester, the university will present another roster of acclaimed films along with its 12th annual ChinaFest, a film series exploring themes of diversity, humanity and cross-cultural understanding. Details will be available later this year.
