Weinstein-Rosenthal Forum on faith, ethics and global society brings Paul Farmer, a founding director of Partners In Health, to campus

The University of Richmond will welcome global humanitarian, medical anthropologist and physician Paul Farmer as the speaker for the 2016 Weinstein-Rosenthal Forum on Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Modlin Center for the Arts.

The Forum theme is “Faith, Ethics, and Global Society.” Farmer is a founding director of Partners In Health, an international non-profit organization that provides direct health care services and has undertaken research and advocacy activities on behalf of those who are sick and living in poverty. Farmer and his colleagues in the U.S., Haiti, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho and Malawi have pioneered novel community-based treatment strategies that demonstrate the delivery of high-quality health care in resource-poor settings.

“As we celebrate the 30th year of the Weinstein-Rosenthal Forum, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Farmer as our keynote speaker,” said Bryn Taylor, interim university chaplain. “Dr. Farmer has taught us that we each have a role to play in repairing the world, and we look forward to hearing his inspiring words as we consider what motivates us and how together we may effect change.”

Farmer serves as chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, is chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and is the United Nations Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Community Based Medicine and Lessons from Haiti.

“I am grateful to the Weinstein and Rosenthal families whose generosity makes this lecture possible,” said President Ronald A. Crutcher. “I am also thrilled that Dr. Farmer, one of the world’s most passionate and influential voices in global health, will visit the University of Richmond to help educate new generations of leaders prepared to make a meaningful difference in the world.”    

This event is free and open to the public with first come, first served seating. Farmer will be receiving an honorary degree during the lecture.
