Series of scholars will be featured as part of the 2016-17 University of Richmond Global Environmental Speaker Series

A group of renowned scholars will speak on everything from coral reefs to contemporary art as part of University of Richmond’s Global Environmental Speaker Series.

Events are free and open to the public. Speakers include:

Garth Meyers, Sept. 29, 6:30 p.m., International Center Commons
Myers is a professor of international studies at Trinity College. His talk will focus on "Urban Environments in Africa: Sustainable Development and Grassroots Socio-Environmental Justice." This event is also part of Africa Week.

Nancy Tuana, Nov. 3, 4:45 p.m., Weinstein Hall, Brown-Alley Room
 Tuana is the founding director of the Rock Ethics Institute at Penn State University. She will speak on "The Ethics of Climate Change: Broadening the Scope of the Dialogue."

Malcolm Hill, Jan. 25, 2017, 4:30 p.m., location to be determined
 Hill, a UR biology professor, will discuss his research. His lecture is titled, “Heart break on coral reefs in the Florida Keys: When the water got too warm and the sponges got sick."

Meredith Niles, Feb. 21, 2017, 4:30 p.m., location to be determined
 Niles, an assistant professor in the Department of Food and Nutrition Sciences at the University of Vermont, will focus on "Food Security and Climate Change."

Tiffany Holmes and Eric Rodenbeck, March 15, 2017, 6 p.m., Camp Concert Hall in the Modlin Center for the Arts
 Holmes, an artist and dean of Undergraduate Studies at School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Rodenbeck, founder, CEO and creative director at Stamen Design in San Francisco, will hold a conversation presented in conjunction with an exhibition that will be on view Feb. 9, 2017, to May 5, 2017, at the Harnett Museum of Art titled, "Crooked Data: (Mis)Information in Contemporary Art.”

“One of our major goals is to cross disciplinary and geographic boundaries,” said Todd Lookingbill, chair of the Department of Geography and the Environment and event organizer. “We are especially excited this year to be partnering with other significant events on campus, such as the African Film Festival and Harnett Museum exhibition, to promote environmental awareness.”
