University of Richmond dean appointed by governor to the Virginia Board of Education

Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced additional appointments to his administration today, including Jamelle Wilson, dean of the School of Professional and Continuing Studies at the University of Richmond, to the Virginia Board of Education.

“I am humbled to be invited to serve the Commonwealth as a member of Virginia’s Board of Education, especially at this time in our education history,” she said. “We know the role that education plays in providing access and opportunity for our children, but we also know that quality education is a key attribute of healthy families, resilient communities and a vibrant, productive society.”

“As a product of Virginia’s public schools, I am keenly aware of the power of education to make a difference in the life of a child – to change one’s life course,” she added. “Education matters for all of us, and I am honored to be able to serve the children of our state and their families in this capacity.”

Prior to her appointment as dean, Wilson served as superintendent of schools for Hanover County from 2011-2015. In 2015 she was named the Region 1 Superintendent of the Year. Prior to that she served as assistant superintendent for instructional leadership. Wilson also served as an elementary school principal in Hanover and Caroline counties.

Wilson earned her Doctor of Education in education leadership and policy from the University of Virginia. She earned a Master of Arts in English from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Teaching from University of Virginia, where she also earned her Bachelor of Arts in English.
