UR journalism professor Stephen Nash to speak about new book on uncertain future of America's national parks and public lands

As part of the Global Environment Speaker Series, Steve Nash, visiting senior research scholar, will speak on his new book “Grand Canyon for Sale: Public Lands versus Private Interests in the Era of Climate Change.”

“Grand Canyon for Sale” discusses the uncertain future of America’s public lands, which include national parks, forests, wildlife refuges and monuments. The book looks at the science behind how climate change causes irreparable damage and explores the current political climate that also threatens these areas.

"The natural systems of our national parks, forests, monuments and other public lands have been in decline," Nash said. "Under the Trump administration, the deterioration accelerates. But good science research is the basis for a strong political response to these challenges."

Nash’s reporting has been published in periodicals that include The New York Times, The Washington Post, BioScience, The Scientist and the Journal of the Society of Environmental Scientists. Nash has been teaching in University of Richmond’s journalism department since 1980.

The Global Environment Speaker Series is hosted by the Department of Geography and the Environment, the International Studies Program and the Environmental Studies Program. The program aims to bring noteworthy scholars to Richmond to speak on issues affecting the global environment. Funding for the series is provided by the Class of 1992 Environmental Awareness Endowment.

This event will be held Jan. 31 at 5 p.m. in Carole Weinstein International Center, International Commons. This event is free and open to the public.
