URPD Earns Accreditation with Excellence Award

August 13, 2018

The University of Richmond Police Department was selected by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement to receive the Accreditation with Excellence Award.

“Your agency has clearly demonstrated a commitment to professionalism and CALEA Accreditation has undoubtedly become an institutionalized management model for the organization,” CALEA wrote to URPD Police Chief David McCoy.

Agencies that earn the Accreditation with Excellence Award have met several criteria, including:

  • Excellence in the development and implementation of contemporary policies and procedures.
  • Excellence in the ability to use the CALEA Accreditation process as a tool for continuous organizational improvement.
  • Excellence in the collection, review, and analysis of organizational data for the purpose of public safety service improvement.

“This award recognizes the commitment and hard work of URPD officers and staff to provide a safe and healthy campus community,” said McCoy. “It also provides a standard in policing that is shared with our regional partners in the City of Richmond and Henrico County, both of which are CALEA accredited.”

URPD is the first private institution and is currently the longest running university law enforcement agency to be accredited by CALEA. The accreditation is good for four years.
