University of Richmond to Offer Master of Teaching Degree Program

The University of Richmond School of Professional and Continuing Studies will now offer a Master of Teaching degree beginning this fall.  

The program builds on the school’s teacher licensure program, which has been preparing individuals interested in transitioning into education for nearly 30 years.

“The University of Richmond’s teacher licensure program has developed a strong reputation with school divisions around the state,” said Jamelle Wilson, dean of the School of Professional and Continuing Studies. “Our students often receive job offers before completing their student teaching experience and are often awarded ‘Teacher of The Year’ honors. Offering a master’s degree in teaching was the next step for us to build on the success of this program.”  

The Master of Teaching degree is designed for students who hold a bachelor’s degree in a discipline other than education, but want to learn the skills to become an effective classroom teacher. The program includes 30 credit-hours of coursework as well as a required 12-hour student-teaching internship and a capstone seminar.

“Teacher shortages are pervasive throughout our country and our state,” said Laura Kuti, assistant chair of teacher education at UR. “This program aims to equip more teachers with the knowledge and experience they need to not only transition into education, but to achieve sustained success in the classroom.”
