UR Named Top Producer of Fulbright U.S. Scholars and Students

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — The University of Richmond is included on the list of U.S. colleges and universities that produced the most Fulbright U.S. Scholars and Students in 2019-20.

UR is among only 20 institutions in the country to be honored in both categories. Two faculty and four students received Fulbright awards in 2019-20.

Biology professor Amy Treonis received a Fulbright Scholar award to support ten months of teaching and research at the University of Namibia in Africa. Treonis, a soil ecologist, is researching nematodes, an understudied group of microscopic organisms found in soils and sediments. Learn more in this media release.

Martha Merritt, dean of international education, received a Fulbright International Education Administrators Seminar Award to spend two weeks in Japan strengthening connections between UR and partners in Japan. Learn more in this media release.

Four students, all now recent alums, received Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships. The recipients and locations of service include: Griffin Trau, Czech Republic; Justine Guan, Kazakhstan; Emily Landon, Tajikistan; and Thomas Vanderbeek, Germany. Learn more in this media release.

“The Fulbright program provides an opportunity for our faculty and students to share their talents with others around the world and to bring the global perspectives they develop back to our campus,” said University of Richmond President Ronald A. Crutcher.

The Fulbright student competition is administered through Office of Scholars and Fellowships. The Fulbright Scholar Program is supported through Foundation, Corporate, and Government Relations.
