Police Accreditation Assessment Team Invites Public Comment

March 25, 2022

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — The University of Richmond Police Department, an accredited agency through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, is scheduled for an assessment as part of its reaccreditation process to verify the department continues to meet national standards. The assessment will be conducted virtually on April 4-6.

CALEA’s program strives to improve the delivery of public safety services by maintaining a body of standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.

“Maintaining compliance with the CALEA standards ensures that URPD delivers the best possible service to the University community,” said Dave McCoy, associate vice president for public safety and URPD Chief.

As part of the assessment, employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments in two ways:

Public Zoom hearing session: April 5, at 5 p.m. Information regarding this hearing session will be available on the URPD website, https://police.richmond.edu.

Telephone session: April 5, 2-4 p.m. by calling 804-662-3106 and providing feedback to the assessment team.

Telephone and Zoom comments are limited to 5 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards. A list of standards is available at www.calea.org. Individuals may contact Accreditation Manager Lieutenant John Jacobs at 804-289-8724 or jjacobs@richmond.edu for additional information.

Anyone wishing to submit written comments about the University of Richmond Police Department’s ability to comply with the CALEA standards may submit them to www.calea.org or Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, 13575 Heathcote Blvd., Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia, 20155.

The University of Richmond Police Department is working toward its tenth accreditation with CALEA. URPD is the first private institution and is currently the longest running university law enforcement agency to be accredited by CALEA. Agencies must reapply for accreditation every three years and submit annual reports attesting to continued compliance with accreditation standards.
