University of Richmond Police Department Achieves Reaccreditation for Campus Public Safety Management

April 10, 2023

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — The University of Richmond Police Department has earned reaccreditation by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators for demonstrating a commitment to the highest professional practices in campus public safety management, administration, operations, and support services.

This achievement is in addition to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies reaccreditation, which URPD earned for a 10th time in July 2022.

URPD is one of only a handful of private institutions in the country that has a full-service law enforcement agency accredited by these agencies. URPD was the first, and currently longest-running, private institution to be accredited by CALEA.

Accreditation is a rigorous process that includes self-assessment, community input, and a review of policies, practices, and processes against international best practices.

“Maintaining compliance with these national and international standards ensures that URPD delivers the best possible service to the University community,” said URPD Chief Dave McCoy, associate vice president for public safety.

URPD was also recently awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice for virtual reality technology and de-escalation training. The Law Enforcement Agency De-Escalation Grant, which is provided through the DOJ’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, will further URPD's mission to build and foster stronger relationships to ensure a safe campus environment.
