UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — Five University of Richmond students were offered Gilman scholarships to support their study abroad experiences. Gilman grants allow students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad.

The Gilman Scholarship contributes to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs’ diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility efforts to engage the American people in foreign policy.

University of Richmond recipients include:

Yamir Chapman, a junior from Trenton, New Jersey, who will study abroad in Italy. Chapman is double majoring in leadership studies and psychology.

Sogona Cisse, a junior from Bronx, New York, who will study abroad in the Czech Republic. Cisse is double majoring in global studies and leadership studies.

Christopher Mitchell, a senior from Glen Allen, Virginia, who will study abroad in the United Kingdom. Mitchell is majoring in leadership studies.

Daniela Andrea Perez, a junior from Stamford, Connecticut, who will study abroad in Italy. Perez is double majoring in business administration and psychology.

Jae Will, a sophomore from Mechanicsville, Virginia, who was offered a scholarship to study abroad in Taiwan. Will is double majoring in Chinese studies and computer science.

According to Gilman, on average 70% of Gilman recipients self-identify as racial or ethnic minorities, 60% are from rural areas and small towns across America, and half are first-generation students. All are Pell Grant recipients.

“The Gilman Scholars program is a great opportunity for students to study or intern abroad without worrying about the financial burden that could be a barrier,” said Dana Kuchem, director of the Office of Scholars and Fellowships. “Study abroad experiences through this program focus on gaining skills critical to national security and economic competitiveness.”

Since the program started in 2001, 89 University of Richmond students have been offered Gilman scholarships.
