University of Richmond Department of Public Safety Receives Grant Funding for Emergency Response Enhancements

July 10, 2023

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — In the wake of a nationwide increase in mass shootings and other violent crimes, the University of Richmond Department of Public Safety has identified key strategies to improve its response in the event of an on-campus threat.

The University received a $78,000 award from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services using American Rescue Plan Act funds. UR’s public safety department will improve its coordination with city and county first responders and expand resources to limit trauma and loss of life in the event of an emergency.

“This funding provides an opportunity to continue to enhance the service we provide to our community,” said Maribel Street, director of emergency management.

During the academic year, the population on campus averages about 6,000 people daily, and events can draw thousands more. To best protect and care for the community, UR’s public safety professionals must anticipate and prepare for a wide range of emergency scenarios and potential threats.

As part of this funding, UR’s public safety team will deploy the “Stop the Bleed” program, which trains first responders and community members to learn how to stop uncontrolled bleeding in the event of an emergency and implement communications software to allow for faster coordination with local police, fire, and ambulance authorities.
