University of Richmond Sociology Professor Wins National Award for Book on Human Behavior in Wartime
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — Jeffrey K. Hass, professor of sociology at the University of Richmond, has been awarded the Komarovsky Book Award from the Eastern Sociological Society for his book Wartime Suffering and Survival: The Human Condition under Siege in the Blockade of Leningrad, 1941-1944.
Hass’ research explores social change, economic and political sociology, and power and culture in Russia. Wartime Suffering and Survival draws on seldom-used archival materials to explore how individuals coped with the profound suffering experienced during the 900-day siege of Leningrad by the Nazis in World War II.
“It is an honor to receive this award from a field leader like the Eastern Sociological Society, which is committed to advancing sociological research,” said Hass. “We still know too little about social practices under duress. I hope this book will inspire readers seeking a way to understand human behavior during times of trauma.”
This award is the third that Hass has received for Wartime Suffering and Survival. He also received an Outstanding Book Award and an honorable mention for the Distinguished Scholarly Book Award from the American Sociological Association.
