University of Richmond’s International Education Week to Explore Rivers, Indigenous Communities, and Justice

November 9, 2023
The IEW Fair will feature many topics, including sustainability in study abroad, sustainability in children’s literature, and more.

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — International Education Week returns to the University of Richmond Nov. 13–17 with an exploration of local-global sustainability through the themes of rivers, indigenous communities, and justice.

Guest speakers for this year’s program include environmentalist David Orr, Daniel Wildcat from Haskell Indian Nations University, Māori activist and Professor of Law Jacinta Ruru from the University of Otago in New Zealand, and indigenous leaders from the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazon and central Virginia.

“International Education Week at UR is a wonderful way to promote deeper cultural exchange on campus,” said Martha Merritt, dean of international education. “UR has forged strong relationships with global education colleagues in Denmark, Japan, South Africa, and New Zealand, and we’re honored to bring partners back to campus this year to become better ambassadors for a more sustainable future.”

Week-long programming will feature presentations and discussions on topics including mapping and justice; indigenous leaders as defenders of the environment; and gender equity and sustainability leadership.

Participants will also enjoy excursions to the James River, a Local-Global Sustainability Fair that will bring together multiple colleges and universities, and campus dining opportunities featuring hyper-local Virginia ingredients with flavors inspired by UR’s global partner universities.
