University of Richmond Donates Modular Units Used During COVID-19 Response to Central International College

August 1, 2024

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND ─ As part of its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of Richmond purchased five doublewide and 20 single modular units to use for isolation and quarantine of residential students. Once the University determined the modular units were no longer required to support campus operations, they donated them to other organizations that needed them.

Last week, UR donated its remaining modular units to Central International College, an accredited, non-profit institution. CIC offers both an associate's and bachelor’s degree in religious studies through an online program, and they are planning to expand their degree options to offer a series of workforce certificates starting in the spring of 2025.

CIC is currently developing a property in Waverly, Virginia, to offer in-person courses, and they will be using the modular units as dorm rooms for students. Each single room within the units includes a full bathroom and is furnished with a bed, wall-mounted TV, storage cabinet, dresser, and desk.

“We haven’t needed to use the modular units the past few academic years,” said Maria O’Callaghan-Cassidy, senior associate vice president for Campus Operations. “It’s nice to see this positive outcome from the challenges during the pandemic, and we are delighted to help serve needs in the greater community.”

“We at Central International College have been blessed in many ways over the years, but of all of our blessings, I count this blessing given to us by the University of Richmond as one of the best ever,” said Willard Bailey, founder and president of CIC. “This generous gift will help us move our vision forward and puts Central International College in a position to help a great number of young men and women.”

In July 2021, UR arranged to donate five doublewide modular units to Family Crisis Support Services in Norton, Virginia. FCSS provides emergency shelter and transitional residential housing to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and offers emergency shelter for victims of homelessness.
