UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND —The University of Richmond maintains its No. 2 ranking as a top baccalaureate college for the number of students studying abroad according to this year’s “Open Doors Report” by the Institute of International Education.

With 630 students participating in study abroad programming during the 2017-18 academic year, UR maintains its spot at No. 2 for the fourth consecutive year.

UR also maintained its No. 7 ranking for international enrollment among baccalaureate colleges. 420 international students represented 73 different countries during the 2017-18 academic year. It was the only Virginia baccalaureate school recognized as a leading institution in this category.

“Our international students and the experiences our students have abroad together make up a diverse campus community that fosters new ideas and perspectives,” said Martha Merritt, dean of international education. “We’re constantly exploring how to increase our number of students studying abroad as well as how we can continue welcoming new cultures here from across the globe.”

In 2019 the Office of International Education implemented a new “Encompass” program, which aims to break down barriers for students who traditionally do not participate in study abroad opportunities, including athletes and first-generation students. Programs like “The Return” help with the transition back home once experience abroad is completed.
