UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As you research stories about this annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease, consider the University of Richmond for expert resources.

Featured experts include:

Kathryn Jacobsen on public health
Jacobsen, a professor of health studies, is an expert in epidemiology, global health, public health, and disease prevention and control. She can speak to the value of health promotion initiatives like National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“Each year, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month partner organizations raise awareness about the value of routine breast cancer screening and help women access low-cost mammograms in their communities,” Jacobsen said. “Since so many adults had to postpone routine screening tests related to the pandemic, these events this October will be especially important.”    

Julie Pollock on health research
Pollock, a chemistry professor, uses chemical biology techniques to understand breast cancer development and progression. She studies how proteins influence cancer growth and migration and develops drug-like molecules to combat the disease.

Camilla Nonterah on health behaviors and chronic disease
Nonterah is a counseling psychologist whose research and clinical interests focus on behavioral medicine. A portion of her work focuses on the psychosocial aspects of chronic illness as well as health disparities and health equity, health behaviors, treatment seeking, and mental health.
