Titanium
Ryan Coppage, director of introductory laboratories in the Department of Chemistry, can speak to the role of Rutile, a major mineral source of the Titanium, Element 22, in ceramics.
Coppage is drawn to the overlap between science and art.
"From an art perspective, materials chemistry is a perfect platform from which to examine and explain color, surface texture, glazing, and desirable ceramic surface effects," said Coppage.
He currently works on research projects that are frequently split between the University of Richmond and the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, developing low metal loading color alternatives for ceramic surfaces.
Through the lens of his research, Coppage has examined several pieces housed the University of Richmond's Lora Robins Gallery.
