University of Richmond Alum Scores 'Hole in One' Internship

Lauren Conder, '14, turned her love of golf into a career. As a student athlete on the University of Richmond golf team, Conder always knew she wanted to be involved in sports. Through previous internships and experiences, she gained an internship with The Golf Channel in May 2014.

Conder’s internship was with The Golf Channel’s show Golf Central, the news and analysis show for the network. Golf Central provides highlights and analysis from all of the golf tours daily. During her internship, Conder contributed daily content, collaborated with editors and designers, created features for the Wyndham Championship, and arranged daily features for the nightly broadcast. 

Two summers before, Conder had a summer internship with the San Francisco Giants, a Major League Baseball team. At this internship she worked in the “Junior Giants” program, which helps to promote healthy lifestyle choices for children. The highlight of this experience for her was the Brian Wilson’s Glove Giveaway, where Wilson, a professional baseball player who now pitches for the Los Angeles Dodgers, spent time speaking to children and giving away over 1,000 gloves.

“It was inspiring to see as [Wilson] displayed a great care for his fans and particularly the Junior Giants Program,” said Conder.

Condor landed these excellent internship experiences through the support of her professors and the Office of Alumni and Career Services (OACS). Career advisors from OACS helped her define her career goals, create a career path, review her resume and cover letter, prep for interviews, and even apply for graduate school. She attended many of the programs and workshops that OACS offers, including: Evening of Etiquette, Spiders in Sports and Sports Management, Spiders in RVA: Marketing and Careers in Communication and Writing. Through this support, as well as the help of her excellent Political Science professors, Conder was able to achieve success. One professor that had a profound impact on Conder was her academic advisor, Dr. Kevin Cherry. 

“Dr. Cherry was one of the best mentors I could have ever asked for. I am very grateful to have had such a great network of professors that guided me to become a better citizen, cared about my future, and have genuine concern for my well-being,” says Conder.

Conder recently accepted a full time position as a Revenue Associate at GolfNow, Golf Channel’s online tee time business. GolfNow is an online tee time resource for golfers to book great rates in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, Scotland and Ireland.

“No matter what I decide to do throughout the course of my life and works, I hope to always be a good role model for women in sports,” she said.
