Student Spotlight: Lily Howlett, '19

February 26, 2019
This senior marketing student has often stood out to professors for her professionalism, work ethic, and creative problem solving skills.

Lily Howlett is a senior concentrating in marketing. She has often stood out to professors for her professionalism, work ethic, and creative problem solving skills. She is on the National Selling Team at University of Richmond, has been involved with the University's American Marketing Association chapter, and is the president of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. In summer 2018, Lily was a marketing and public relations intern for Tory Sport, an athliesure wear line for Tory Burch launched four years ago.

"I loved interning for Tory Sport because it operated very much on its own and had that startup mentality where everyone is pitching in where necessary. It was nice because you had the backing of the Tory Burch brand and got exposure to so many different areas being on such a small team."

One of five members on the National Team Selling group, Lily and the other members won out of 24 schools in this year's competition. Other schools that competed - UVA, Villanova, Baylor - have their own selling program or concentration. University of Richmond has only one selling class taught by Dr. Jeff Carlson.

“It speaks wonders about us and our coaches that we were half a semester into our selling course and able to beat schools that had such a big selling curriculum,” Lily said.

After graduation, Lily wants to work in brand management or account management, hopefully on the West coast!

Teacher Quote: "Lily is such a bright star in the marketing department. She’s done an amazing job exposing herself to marketing experiences across the spectrum, from working in PR as an intern with Tory Burch to displaying her sales skills by winning the National Team Selling Competition to demonstrating her leadership ability as the president of her sorority. She was such a pleasure to have in my class and I can’t wait to see what she will do after graduation." - Dr. Sara Hanson (Assistant Professor of Marketing)

What do you like most about the marketing department? They are all very willing to help you in whatever capacity they can. I truly have a great relationship with every single professor in the marketing department and they know me personally and will even send me an email if they see some article they think I would like or something like that. They are really willing to go above and beyond for you.
