University of Richmond shares tips for college students to relieve finals stress
As finals week arrives, students on college campuses across the country may not be focusing enough on maintaining healthy minds and bodies. Heather Sadowski, assistant director of wellness in the Weinstein Center for Recreation and Wellness offers the following advice for students to alleviate stress and stay healthy. The advice is applicable to anyone who wants to minimize stress.
Stay Hydrated
Caffeinated beverages such as coffee and energy drinks are popular during study time but those choices are not always the healthiest. Try carrying a reusable water bottle and placing it near you while you study to get the recommended eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day.
Incorporate Movement
Studying involves a lot of sitting in one place for an extended period of time, which can lead to a tired mind and body. Stay active for 15 minutes between study sessions to boost blood flow to the brain. Take a short walk with a friend or do quick body exercises like crunches.
Acknowledge your Emotions
It is always important to understand how you feel. Being stressed and overwhelmed is a common and normal occurrence and acknowledging that can help alleviate those feelings.
Get Plenty of Sleep
Sleep helps with stress reduction and better memory retention when studying. Plan your study times so that you finish at a reasonable hour so you can get enough sleep the night before a test or presentation.
