UR Liberal Arts Professor Erik Nielson Announced as Finalist for Library of Virginia Literary Award

Nielson is Nominated for His Latest Book, 'Rap on Trial: Race, Lyrics, and Guilt in America'

Erik Nielson, associate professor of liberal arts in the University of Richmond’s School of Professional & Continuing Studies, has been selected as a finalist for a 2020 Library of Virginia Literary Award.

Nielson and co-author Andrea Dennis were chosen as one of three finalists in the nonfiction category for their book, Rap on Trial: Race, Lyrics, and Guilt in America.

Nielson, who has taught at the University of Richmond since 2011, researches hip hop culture and African American literature. His expertise centers on the intersection of rap music and the law. Rap on Trial is the first in-depth look at the misuse of rap lyrics as evidence in criminal trials.

Finalists were chosen by an independent panel of judges from more than 130 books nominated for the awards.

Winners will be announced during a virtual celebration at the Library of Virginia on Saturday, October 17.
