Four UR Students Awarded Fulbright Grants To Live, Work, and Study in Brazil, Mexico, the Netherlands, and South Korea
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — Four University of Richmond students have been awarded prestigious Fulbright grants to be completed during the 2021-22 academic year.
The recipients include 2021 graduates Caroline Fernandez, Sabrina Ramsby, Jajsani Roane, and Virginia Sun, who will complete English Teaching Assistantships (ETA).
The Fulbright Program, which is sponsored by the U.S. government, is designed to increase mutual understanding between the U.S. and other countries through educational exchange. The goal of the Fulbright ETA program is to improve foreign students’ English language abilities and knowledge of the U.S, while increasing U.S. students’ language skills and knowledge of the host country.
"The Fulbright is a wonderful fit for Richmond students who are deeply interested in cultural exchange,” said Dana Kuchem, director of the Office of Scholars and Fellowships. “Recipients engage in international study that fuels both their intellectual and personal development.”
Caroline Fernandez, from Charlottesville, Virginia, will teach English to elementary school students in South Korea. Fernandez double majored in international studies and journalism and minored in music and history.
Sabrina Ramsby, from Columbia, South Carolina, will complete her ETA in Brazil. Ramsby double majored in Arabic Studies and Latin American, Latino, and Iberian Studies with a minor in linguistics.
Jajsani Roane, from Richmond, Virginia, will teach in the Netherlands through her Fulbright grant. Roane double majored in environmental studies and visual and media arts practice.
Virginia Sun, from Falls Church, Virginia, received an English Teaching Assistantship grant in Mexico. Sun majored in global studies with a minor in Luso-Brazilian Studies.
To date, the University of Richmond has had 68 student Fulbright grant recipients. The University of Richmond was included on the list of U.S. colleges and universities that produced the most Fulbright U.S. Scholars and Students in 2020-21, the third year in a row for this accolade. UR was among only 17 institutions in the country to be honored in both categories.
