University of Richmond Awarded Competitive Beckman Grant for 6th Time; Funding Will Support Scholarships for Science Students

January 26, 2023

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — The University of Richmond has been awarded a prestigious Beckman Scholars grant for faculty-mentored student research. It is the sixth time Richmond has received the Beckman Scholars award since 2006.

The three-year, $156K grant will support six student research scholarships over three years. The University of Richmond will select its Beckman Scholars among undergraduate biology and chemistry students this spring based on commitment to research, strong academics, and potential to become scientific leaders.

“This grant support will allow six of our most talented students an immersive research experience and will help set their careers in motion,” said Floyd D. and Elisabeth S. Gottwald Professor of Chemistry and associate provost Carol Parish, who directs Richmond’s Beckman program. “Beckman Scholars often go on to win other prestigious awards, including Goldwater, Fulbright, National Science Foundation, Rhodes, and other scholarships.”

Richmond is one of 14 total and one of only four primarily undergraduate schools to receive funding from the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation this year.

“There are a limited number of institutions selected for the award, and our ability to remain competitive among science programs at the nation’s best colleges and universities is a testament to our students, faculty, and research,” Parish said. “Performing faculty-mentored research is a hallmark of a UR education, and this award recognizes that effort and benefits our students."
