The grant funding will support three performances commissioned by the Modlin Center:
September 26 & 28
The Modlin Center for the Arts will host the world premiere of the chamber opera What Belongs to You, based on the debut novel of the same name by Garth Greenwell. Composed by David T. Little and directed by Mark Morris, the opera will be performed by tenor Karim Sulayman and the contemporary instrumental ensemble Alarm Will Sound.
February 21, 2025
In another world premiere, Chicago-based percussion quartet Third Coast Percussion will perform Murmurs in Time, composed by renowned tabla player Zakir Hussain. Hussain will join Third Coast Percussion in performing the premiere work.
April 5, 2025
Third Coast Percussion and dancers of the Twyla Tharp Dance company will perform an original adaptation of Philip Glass’ Aguas da Amazonia for percussion quartet and flute. This performance will be held at the Carpenter Theatre in the Dominion Energy Center in downtown Richmond.
“The Modlin Center is honored to have received national recognition and federal funding for these innovative, multidisciplinary performances, all of which feature world-class artists,” said Paul Brohan, executive director of the Modlin Center. “These performances will not only enrich the Richmond cultural landscape, they will also provide unique teaching opportunities for the benefit of our students.”
