Peart Will Support Creation of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics Program in Chile

July 10, 2024

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — Sandra Peart, dean of the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond, has been named a 2024 Fulbright specialist. This program offers U.S. academics and professionals the opportunity to engage in two- to six-week, project-based exchanges at host institutions around the world.

This summer and fall, Peart will travel to the Universidad del Desarrollo in Santiago, Chile, to support the development of a philosophy, politics, and economics undergraduate program. Scholarship in this field has a long tradition in North America and Europe, but it is still new in Chile and Latin America. Peart was selected by UDD leadership given her expertise in the history of economics, experience in interdisciplinary curriculum design, and engagement as dean of the Jepson School.

Over the course of two visits, Peart will work with faculty and staff in the School of Government and Center for Social Sciences and Humanities at UDD to build a cohesive interdisciplinary program that can foster democratic ideals and values and establish faculty collaboration and student engagement across diverse academic perspectives.

“For over a decade, my research has focused on democratic ideals and processes,” Peart said. "I am delighted and honored to work with colleagues at the Universidad del Desarrollo to support the development of this important program.”

Next week, UDD is hosting the annual conference of the History of Economic Society, marking the first time the Society has met in South America in its 50-year history. Peart serves on the executive board of the Society and will participate in a plenary session focusing on Adam Smith, a pioneer in moral philosophy and economics. She will also present her research on the history of fiscal responsibility and mentor young Chilean scholars who are enrolled in a young scholar’s program that Peart founded more than two decades ago.

The University of Richmond will host the annual History of Economics Society conference next summer in June 2025. Building on her collaborations as a Fulbright specialist, Peart will welcome scholars from across South America, including Chile, to attend and present at the conference.
