UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — The Princeton Review has recognized the University of Richmond as one of the top 50 schools in the nation for environmental responsibility in the 2025 edition of its annual Guide to Green Colleges.

The University of Richmond has been ranked among the top 50 schools for three consecutive years, and has been recognized in this guide for more than a decade.

Colleges are selected for the Guide to Green Colleges based on school-reported data in addition to surveys of students about their sustainability-related campus experiences. Top 50 schools score well in categories including uses of renewable energy; the availability of sustainability studies in academic offerings; and whether students have a campus quality of life that is both healthy and environmentally conscious.

“UR has built a dedicated culture of sustainability on campus thanks to our students, faculty, staff, and community partners,” said Director of Sustainability Rob Andrejewski. “Whether they are volunteering to divert waste from landfills at football games, informing our campus energy strategy, or studying for a sustainability minor, our community consistently shows their passion and commitment to making UR a better place to learn, live, and work.”

UR’s Office for Sustainability leads year-round environmentally focused initiatives, including volunteer opportunities, film screenings, and more. In 2023, UR won first place in Virginia during the national “Campus Race to Zero Waste” competition, with more than 270 tons of organic waste diversion since November 2020 through the Rethink Waste program. The Office for Sustainability is also currently establishing the Eco-Corridor Orchard & Food Forest, an edible plant demonstration site consisting of fruit trees, shrubs, herbs, and perennial pollinators.
