UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — Four University of Richmond students have been offered Gilman Scholarships to support their study abroad experiences.

“Gilman Scholarships support international educational experiences for outstanding students who might not otherwise travel due to financial barriers,” said Ethan Knight, associate director of the Office of Scholars and Fellowships. “Through this program, students gain invaluable global perspectives, as well as skills that benefit their academic studies and future careers.”

The Gilman Scholarship Program, an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, awarded approximately 1,600 American undergraduate students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. This cohort of Gilman Scholars will study or intern in over 90 countries and represents more than 500 U.S. colleges and universities.

UR’s latest Gilman Scholars are:

  • Noor Abdullah, a junior from Nashville, Tennessee, who will study abroad in New Zealand. She is majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology.
  • Amber Castaneda, a junior from Haltom City, Texas, who will study abroad in Spain. She is majoring in business administration.
  • Sabrina Gaytan Lopez, a sophomore from Laredo, Texas, who will study abroad in the UK. She is majoring in leadership studies and political science.
  • Denis Valazquez Mondragon, a junior from Bessemer, Alabama, who will study abroad in Spain. She is majoring in cognitive science and psychology.

Since the program started in 2001, 105 University of Richmond students have been offered Gilman Scholarships.
