January 21, 2025

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — Richard Haass, an American diplomat and president emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations, will speak at the University of Richmond on Feb. 6.

Haass will be discussing his book The Bill of Obligations: The Ten Habits of Good Citizens. His talk will explore why he believes Americans’ understanding of citizenship needs to be expanded to include our obligations to one another and our government, and how we can strengthen democracy and renew the spirit of a more informed and engaged citizenry.

In addition to his evening talk, as part of his visit to campus, Haass will engage in small groups with students.

“This event is part of ongoing programming at the University of Richmond supporting the vigorous exchange of ideas, thoughtful deliberation, and discussion of timely topics,” said University of Richmond President Kevin F. Hallock. “I’m delighted that Dr. Haass, a veteran diplomat and extraordinary international relations scholar, will visit campus to engage with our University community.”

This event, which is free and open to the campus and greater community, will be held at 6 p.m. in the Jepson Alumni Center located at 422 Westhampton Way, Richmond, Virginia, 23173. Advance registration is strongly encouraged to ensure seating is available. A reception and book sale/signing with Haass will directly follow his talk.
