University of Richmond Museums Spring Exhibition Showcases Connection Between Art and Academic Community
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — A new exhibition — Look Again: Art for Our Curriculum — is on view at the Harnett Museum of Art at the University of Richmond through May 17.
Look Again offers a fresh approach to building an art collection, featuring a diverse collection of drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, ceramics, and coins from the University Museums collection that were acquired over the past two years with input from UR’s academic community.
“A university’s art collection should, ideally, reflect the cultural breadth of its campus community,” said Issa Lampe, executive director of University Museums. “This exhibit celebrates the diverse objects and voices in our collection, all of which complement the array of topics that students study at UR.”
Lampe notes that faculty from twenty-seven different departments across academic disciplines brought their classes into the Harnett to engage with art in-person last semester. “Experiential learning is embedded into the culture of teaching here,” said Lampe. “Look Again was curated to reflect the many ways UR’s faculty and students use art to improve their critical thinking skills and engage with academic texts in new ways.”
Visitors will be invited to enjoy interpretative writing from students and faculty that resulted from classroom visits last semester, displayed on the walls alongside works from artists such as Kara Walker, Wendy Red Star, James Van Der Zee, and others.
