April 18, 2025

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education has named Rob Andrejewski, director of sustainability, as a recipient of the inaugural Fellows Award.

The AASHE Fellows Award recognizes mid-career individuals who are significantly contributing to the advancement of sustainability in higher education. Andrejewski is one of ten individuals who were selected based on the impact of their campus projects and programs, presentations and publications, and service and mentorship.

"I am deeply honored to receive the inaugural AASHE Fellows Award, yet this recognition truly belongs to the entire community at the University of Richmond," said Andrejewski. "Sustainability is not a solo journey—it’s a shared path, shaped by the passion and dedication of our students, faculty, staff, and community partners. A brighter tomorrow is only possible when our stars shine together, and I am incredibly grateful to AASHE for their recognition and encouragement as we continue our collective efforts to steward our campus and beyond."

Andrejewski has worked at UR since 2015. Under his leadership, the Office of Sustainability has advanced a number of significant programs, including:

  • The Rethink Waste office, which oversees waste reduction on campus.
  • The Eco-Corridor, an urban greenway that involved the ecological restoration of Little Westham Creek, stormwater management, removal of invasive plants, and planting thousands of native grasses, shrubs, and trees.
  • A solar energy program that includes an array on the roof of the Weinstein Center for Recreation and Wellness and Spider Solar, a large-scale power purchase agreement in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, that made UR the first higher education institution in the southeast to match 100% of its electricity needs with solar energy.
  • Support for the integration of sustainability coursework into the academic curriculum, including teaching Introduction to Sustainability for the sustainability minor and supporting faculty development in sustainability with the River City Project.

"UR is fortunate to have Rob. He is a true leader in advancing sustainability in higher education and at the University of Richmond," said David Hale, executive vice president and chief operating officer. "His wisdom, creativity, and passion leads the way and inspires our students, and all University community members, to continuously enhance our sustainability practices on campus."
