Eight University of Richmond Students Awarded Competitive Gilman Scholarships to Study Abroad

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — Eight University of Richmond students have been offered Gilman Scholarships to support their study abroad experiences.  

“Gilman Scholarships allow students who might not otherwise be able to travel abroad an opportunity to gain invaluable global perspectives, as well as critical skills that benefit their future careers,” said Ethan Knight, associate director of the Office of Scholars and Fellowships.

The Gilman Scholarship Program, an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, awarded approximately 3,500 American undergraduate students from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This cohort of Gilman Scholars will study or intern in over 100 countries.

UR’s latest Gilman Scholars are:

• Eli Amantia, a sophomore who will study abroad in Spain. He is majoring in business administration and Latin American, Latino, and Iberian studies.
• Chiara Coreathers, a sophomore who will study abroad in South Africa. She is majoring in biology.
• Gopika Das, a sophomore who will study abroad in Costa Rica. She is majoring in psychology.
• Julia Guss, a sophomore who will study abroad in South Africa. She is majoring in global studies and history.
• Lena Kim, a sophomore who will study abroad in South Korea. She is majoring in computer science and accounting.
• Maddox Lowe, a sophomore who will study abroad in Spain. He is majoring in philosophy, politics, economics, and law (PPEL).
• Holden Sparrow, a sophomore who will study abroad in Germany. He is majoring in political science.
• Eshaal Syeda, a sophomore who will study abroad in the United Kingdom. She is majoring in cognitive science.

Since the program started in 2001, 113 University of Richmond students have been offered Gilman Scholarships.
