University of Richmond Professor Janelle Peifer Recognized Nationally for Innovative Research in International Education
Faculty Awards
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — University of Richmond psychology professor Janelle Peifer has received the 2025 Innovative Research in International Education Award for her article, “Developmental Pathways to Intercultural Competence in College Students,” published in the Journal of Studies in International Education.
Presented by the Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship Knowledge Community of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, this prestigious award recognizes cutting-edge research that significantly advances the field of international education. Peifer was recognized during the NAFSA 2025 Annual Conference & Expo in San Diego this week.
Peifer’s work explores how college students develop intercultural competence — a critical skill in an increasingly globalized world — and offers insights into how institutions can better support this development through intentional programming and curriculum design. This includes exploring short-term study abroad and assessment in global learning. Peifer has traveled with students to conduct community-engaged research in Panama, Peru, New Zealand, and Nicaragua.
“This recognition affirms the importance of research that bridges classroom learning with global engagement,” said Peifer. “I’m honored to contribute to a deeper understanding of how students grow through international education experiences.”
As part of the award, she will be invited to contribute to professional development and publication opportunities, further amplifying the impact of her research. Peifer will also serve as an honorary member of the 2026 Award Selection Committee, helping to identify future leaders in international education research.
Peifer is a licensed clinical psychologist who areas of expertise also include trauma, identity, and resilience and parasocial relationships. She has worked at the University of Richmond since 2021.
