University of Richmond Students Return to New and Improved Library Spaces
With the first phase of Boatwright Memorial Library’s renovation complete, students are enjoying modern study areas, easier access to resources, and an expanded café.
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — The first major phase of a significant renovation and expansion at University of Richmond’s Boatwright Memorial Library is complete.
The transformational library project began in May 2023. Highlights of the newly opened space include:
- New, unique, and inviting study and gathering spaces, including a two-story enclosed atrium.
- Additional entrances and access to the library from the lake level.
- Easier access to key spaces, including the Book Arts Studio, Rare Books & Archival Collections, and the Lora Robins Gallery.
- An expanded café now located on the ground level of the library.
- An outdoor terrace with enhanced lake views, planters, and a green roof.
As part of this phase of the project, most of the collections and books are now available in the basement level to increase the study and collaboration space on the main levels.
“This renovation transforms Boatwright into an environment where students can move seamlessly from deep study to collaborative innovation, all under one roof,” said Kevin Butterfield, university librarian. “Today’s students don’t work in just one way, and neither should their library. We’ve designed a space that evolves with them, meeting their needs at every stage of their academic journey.”
“This project further amplifies the library as a hub of learning, a gathering space for the exchange of ideas, and a repository of knowledge,” said Joan Saab, executive vice president and provost.
Construction on the final phase of the library project began this summer. Library services will remain fully operational during the continued renovation, with modifications in place to ensure continuity and safety for the community.
