UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND  –  The University of Richmond’s Bonner Center for Civic Engagement recently honored students, faculty, staff, nonprofit leaders, and organizations for their impact in the Richmond community at the annual Engage for Change Awards.

“The Engage for Change Awards are an opportunity to come together and recognize the people at UR and beyond who are doing exceptional work in community-engaged teaching, scholarship, advocacy, and service,” said Sylvia Gale, the executive director of CCE.

Honorees include:

Leadership studies professor Julian Hayter and history professor Michelle Lynn Kahn received the Community-Engaged Teaching Award. Both historians, Hayter and Kahn were recognized for deepening student learning through collaboration with community partners and place-based experiences.

Senior Kalkidan (Kay) Lina was awarded the Service for Change Award for her dedication to Richmond’s Jackson Ward neighborhood. Lina led a comprehensive heat assessment project that resulted in new planned trees for the neighborhood.

Tanya Gonzalez, executive director of Sacred Heart Center, was awarded the Community Educator Award for her impact on students, faculty, and staff through the sharing of her knowledge and expertise.

The University of Richmond School of Law’s In-House Clinics received a Contribution to the Institution Award. Providing free legal services to community members unable to afford it, the clinics help support the lives of clients and provide students hands-on work experience under faculty mentorship.
