University of Richmond senior Cain Bonniwell is one of five college students who completed summer internships with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.

Bonniwell worked under the supervision of scientists at the institute’s Eastern Shore Lab in Wachapreague, seeding near-shore waters with juvenile scallops. The goal of the seeding project is to restore the area’s once-flourishing bay scallop fishery.

Bonniwell served last year as vice president of the university’s Society of Physics Students, a club that promotes interest in the sciences among undergraduates. He and junior Ben Paurstein of San Antonio, Texas, presented their research on nuclear isotopes to the American Physical Society last year.

A native of Belle Haven on the Eastern Shore, Bonniwell graduated with honors from Northampton High School, where he received the President’s Award for Excellence and awards in both robotics and science.
