UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — The University of Richmond is a leader among peer institutions for study abroad programs according to the latest Open Doors Report. UR ranked first among baccalaureate colleges for the total number of students studying abroad.

UR has been contributing data to the Open Doors Report since the report’s inception in 1949. This annual survey focuses on international education opportunities, including data from the U.S. Department of State, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and the Institute of International Education. UR has ranked No. 1 for study abroad participation for the last three years.

“The Center for Global Engagement is proud to continue to receive top rankings in study abroad,” said Martha Merritt, dean of global education. “The Open Doors ranking is a reflection of UR’s strong international partnerships and the faculty and staff across campus who continue to help students realize their goals for global engagement.”

More than 70% of UR students graduate with international experience.

“We offer opportunities that align with every student’s academic, personal, and career goals,” said Merritt. These include research and internship opportunities, traditional semester-long programs, and the award-winning EnCompass program, which provides support to students who are least likely to have an international experience.

Among peer baccalaureate institutions, the University of Richmond also ranked:

  • #1 in mid-length duration of study abroad (tied)
  • #8 in international student enrollment
  • #11 in long-term duration of study abroad
  • #12 in short-term duration of study abroad
