University of Richmond Student Volunteers Offer Free Tax Preparation
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — The University of Richmond is offering free tax preparation for the 15th consecutive tax season. UR is hosting one of 11 tax prep sites within the United Way of Greater Richmond and Petersburg’s Tax Assistance Program.
The University of Richmond tax prep site, operated by the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement and Robins School of Business, is located at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in downtown Richmond. Families and individuals with income of $69,000 or less may sign up for an appointment or walk in to receive tax assistance.
“Working through the VITA program, Robins School of Business students offer free tax preparation services for our community,” said Sasha Hollister, assistant director of community relationships and place-based engagement at the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement. “These students learn the value of civic engagement, gain experience working with clients, and provide real-world impact by saving our Richmond neigchbors the expense of tax preparation.”
More than 80 University of Richmond students have joined other community volunteers to become IRS-certified to support this year’s program. Training includes learning about special credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled.
Last year, students prepared over 800 tax returns.
Interested participants can learn more on the VITA program website.
