Police accreditation assessment team invites public comment

March 31, 2026

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — An assessor from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies — an internationally recognized independent, non‑governmental organization that sets nationally recognized standards for public safety agencies — will visit the University of Richmond on April 6 to examine all aspects of the University of Richmond Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations and support services.

Established in 1979, CALEA® provides a structured framework designed to enhance accountability, professionalism, and the quality of law enforcement services. Through its voluntary accreditation program, agencies demonstrate compliance with applicable standards required by the Commission.

“Accreditation is a highly coveted recognition of public safety professional excellence,” said URPD Chief David McCoy. “We want to ensure the university community is receiving the best service possible from URPD. Maintaining compliance with the CALEA standards is one of the primary measures that we can do that.”

URPD is the first private institution and is currently the longest running university law enforcement agency to be accredited by CALEA®. Accreditation is a four-year process, during which the agency must submit annual reports and participate in annual remote web-assessments attesting to continued compliance with accreditation standards.

As part of the assessment, community members and University of Richmond employees are invited to provide comments to CALEA® in the form of commendations or concerns. The purpose of the accreditation process is to support continuous improvement and foster the pursuit of professional excellence. CALEA® is not an investigatory body and subsequently the public portal should not be used to submit information for such purposes. These comments are submitted directly to the Commission of Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. Please visit police.richmond.edu, calea.org or directly at https://cimrs2.calea.org/893

A copy of the standards is available upon request from the University of Richmond Police Department Accreditation Manager, Public Safety Compliance Analyst Nicholas Myers, at the Special Programs Building, 490 Westhampton Way, University of Richmond, VA 23173 or via email nmyers@richmond.edu.
