University of Richmond’s Modlin Center for the Arts Celebrates 30th Anniversary with Landmark Performances and Two World Premieres
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — The University of Richmond’s Modlin Center for the Arts is celebrating its 30th anniversary in the upcoming 2026–27 season of Modlin Arts Presents.
“For thirty years, Modlin Arts Presents has welcomed a diverse array of world-class artists to the University of Richmond campus and our broader community,” said Paul Brohan, executive director of the Modlin Center.
Among the landmark performances for the 30th anniversary season are two world premieres co-commissioned by the Modlin Center. Season highlights include:
September 3 & 4
Acclaimed actor Patrick Page stars in All the Devils are Here: How Shakespeare Invented the Villain. Created and performed by Patrick Page and directed by Simon Godwin, Page plays more than a dozen Shakespearean villains in this dynamic show.
January 29 & 30, 2027
Premier chamber choir The Crossing, led by conductor Donald Nally, performs poor hymnal — a 14-piece song cycle by Pulitzer-winning composer David Lang. This engagement is the world premiere of the fully staged work, choreographed by Annie-B Parson, which is co-commissioned by the Modlin Center.
March 31, 2027
Wynton Marsalis brings his signature artistry to the stage on his final tour as the visionary face of Jazz at Lincoln Center. This special performance will be held at the Carpenter Center Theatre at the Dominion Energy Center.
April 9 & 10, 2027
As artist in residence with the Modlin Center for the Arts and Bonner Center for Civic Engagement, Marc Bamuthi Joseph has spent three years on campus and in the community, engaging with Richmond’s past and present to create a libretto that explores six themes — memory, folklore, history, truth, facts, and erasure.
Remembering Empathy is the new orchestral work that joins Joseph’s spoken-word reflections with composer Tamar-kali’s score. This world premiere of Remembering Empathy is co-commissioned by the Modlin Center and the Richmond Symphony, and will be performed by the Richmond Symphony under the direction of Valentina Peleggi.
This season showcases the Modlin Center’s continued commitment to education.
“The majority of visiting artists commit to an extended residency beyond their performance to contribute their experiences, wisdom, techniques, and talents with UR students and the citizens of Richmond,” said Brohan.
