University of Richmond Police Department Hosts National Night Out Event

August 5, 2026

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — On August 4, the University of Richmond Police Department hosted a National Night Out event on campus.

National Night Out is a community policing program held across the country on the first Tuesday in August, as an opportunity for local police departments to connect with the communities they serve.

UR’s National Night Out event, held during the day on Westhampton Green, brought together faculty, staff, students, and their families with URPD officers and local government and Richmond organizations.

Representatives from Henrico County Police and Fire Departments, the DMV Highway Safety Office, the Virginia Law Enforcement Foundation, and Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney were in attendance. Attendees also enjoyed free food and games, including a raffle to raise funds for Special Olympics Virginia.

“National Night Out was an opportunity to connect our faculty and staff to URPD and our community partners,” said URPD Officer Davan Guyton, who helped organize the event. “We were excited to bring a nationwide event to campus for the first time.”

URPD hosts a variety of community-focused programs throughout the year to support the campus community. One example is its Vehicle Safety Day, held before major travel periods such as winter break, when students, faculty, and staff can receive a free vehicle safety inspection.

“Through National Night Out, the University of Richmond Police Department has the opportunity introduce the community to partners, both on and off campus, that help the police department navigate problem solving,” said URPD Sergeant Tim Meacham.“The hope is that we share how we perform with other partners in public safety and the criminal justice system to help us keep our campus and community safe and secure.”
