University of Richmond Senior Priscila Ramirez Named Newman Civic Fellow for Commitment to Public Service and Youth Mentorship

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — University of Richmond senior Priscila Ramirez has been named a 2026–27 Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact, a national coalition of colleges and universities working to advance the public purposes of higher education.

This is the ninth consecutive year that a UR student has been named a Newman Civic Fellow. The year-long program recognizes students with extraordinary leadership potential and commitment to creating positive change.

During her time at UR, Ramirez has remained dedicated to serving youth in the Richmond community and at home in Harlem, New York. For two years, she has served as a coach for Girls on the Run, a Richmond nonprofit dedicated to inspiring young girls by combining physical activity with the development of crucial life skills. She has spent several summers interning at Harlem Grown, a nonprofit based in Harlem, New York, devoted to advancing food education and youth development.  She has also served as a Teach for America Ignite tutor, where she provided tutoring in mathematics to seventh graders in Atlanta. 

After graduation, she hopes to pursue public service and explore career paths in public policy. 

“As a Nuyorican, my background has shaped the way I understand community, culture, and the importance of having a voice in the decisions that affect us,” said Ramirez. “My experiences at Richmond have allowed me to learn more about my own identity while also understanding the experiences of others.”

Ramirez, who is majoring in economics and American studies, is also a Bonner Scholar, which recognizes her commitment to community engagement.

Students are nominated for the Newman Civic Fellowship by a committee related to their exemplary community commitment. The nomination is submitted along with a letter of support by their campus president.

“On campus, Priscila leads other Bonner Scholars, bringing positive energy and thoughtful reflections to meetings and capstone experiences and inspiring fellow scholars to remain committed. She is a humble, focused leader who is passionate about empowering youth from all backgrounds,” said University of Richmond President Kevin F. Hallock.
