University of Richmond Artist Harrison Moenich Recognized by Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — An original artwork by Harrison Moenich, the Manager of Photography Arts & Media Equipment for the Department of Art and Art History, was selected for inclusion in the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art’s 2026 Made in VA Biennial. 

Made in VA celebrates the work of artists across Virginia, showcasing contemporary art throughout the region. Selected artwork is curated from hundreds of submissions. 

Moenich’s photograph, titled “Z,” earned an Honorable Mention as part of the 2026 Made in VA Biennial awards. 

“Z” is a 48”x60” photograph from a documentary series Moenich has been working on for two years, following the Queer Moto Club in Richmond. The project is entirely shot on various formats of black & white film and then hand-developed, scanned, printed, mounted, and framed by Moenich.

“I am deeply humbled to be included in Virginia MOCA’s Made in VA Biennial,” said Moenich. “Richmond is a beacon for queer folks in the Southeast looking for community, and I’ve been honored to make portraits of many of the members of Q.M.C. on their bikes, in locations that hold significance to them. I’m grateful to the Art & Art History Department’s generous support and stellar resources. It’s been a labor of love and I’m very excited to begin sharing my new body of work with the public.”

Moenich, who has worked at UR since 2016, has had their work exhibited nationally at institutions including the Cranbrook Art Museum, Ohio University Art Gallery, VCU’s Anderson Gallery, and many others.
