City of the Dead

Doug Winiarski, a professor of religious and American studies, examines the emergence of early American evangelicalism through the lives of ordinary people.

He teaches a course called "Richmond: City of the Dead," which he discusses in the August 2018 issue of Discover Richmond Magazine, produced by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Winiarski is the author of more than a dozen articles in leading historical journals as well as the Bancroft Prize-winning "Darkness Falls on the Land of Light: Experiencing Religious Awakenings in Eighteenth-Century New England."
