English professor Elizabeth Outka, an expert on early 20th-century literature and culture, is the author of the award-winning book Viral Modernism: The Influenza Pandemic and Interwar Literature. Outka's book investigates how one of the deadliest plagues in history — the 1918-1919 influenza, which infuses modernist literature and helps fuel the emergence of zombies and popularity of séances.
